On Wednesday November 9, South Australia’s Bowls Australia Regional Bowls Managers, Daniel Cocks and Brett Herbert, attended the ‘Premier’s Be Active Challenge’ schools event, at the Netball SA stadium.

Organised by the Australian Council for Health, Physical Education and Recreation (ACHPER SA branch), the day brought together over 40 schools from across metropolitan and regional South Australia to participate in a range of different sports.

On a hot, dry and windy day, Daniel and Brett organised and ran a number of fun bowls activities for children ranging from Years 2 to 8. Using modified equipment from the ‘Rookie Rollers’ schools bowls program, the young participants were able to experience the sport, many for the first time, in an accessibly easy and entertaining way. It was fantastic to see lots of thinking, rolling, running, adding up points and cheers of excitement, from not only the children but from many of the teachers that joined in as well!

At the end of the event, South Australian Premier Mr Peter Malinauskas presented awards and prizes to attending schools that had achieved special results from the Be Active Challenge throughout the year.

We ensured that all teachers received information packs on the Rookie Rollers sporting schools program. Encouraged with the comments heard from the children on the day including “that was the best sport we did” and “I love bowls”, we hope to see many future stars joining our wonderful sport!
