Wallaroo Wins Community Spirit Award
A special partnership with a local organisation saw the Wallaroo Bowling Club win the Community Spirit Award at the recent Bowls SA Awards Night.
In March 2023 Bedford Wallaroo Day Operations approached the Wallaroo Bowling Club for support to offer indoor bowls as part of their activities and after 12 months the program has achieved excellent outcomes.
The challenge was to accommodate the Bedford Wallaroo client’s various disabilities into an activity that would be fun and achieve the objective of exercise and coordination.
The warm reception and support from the team of Wallaroo Bowling Club volunteers has helped make the experience for participants both purposeful and enjoyable each week, and is one of Bedford Wallaroo’s most popular programs, providing people with limited opportunities from the local community interactions that empower and support them.
Club secretary Mim Topham said she was proud of her club and the work that has gone into making this program happen.
“Our bowls manager has brought so many new dimensions to the club and this is one of them,” she said.
“He has got a great rapport with the program participants and they are so happy and appreciative.
“When they first came in, they struggled but now they are so proficient.
“They aren’t the best bowlers, but they have fun and enjoy it as a team.”
“It is great to see how much they enjoy the game we all love.
“It gives them so much confidence.”
