Family bias wins through – SA Super League 2020

LAWN bowls? More like family feud. The Hicks family of dad Tim, mum Vicki Degenhardt and boys Corey and Charlie will be pitted against each another this morning when season three of the SA Super League launches at Salisbury.

Tim and Corey have been drafted to the Heysen Comets while Vicki will front for the Mallee Pirates and Charlie will make his senior debut with the Central Chargers. The family, all members at Adelaide Bowling Club, aren’t about to let their new allegiances create angst at the dinner table.

“It was pretty exciting when we were all picked,” Degenhardt said. “Charlie was taken with the last pick of the draft. It was pretty late in the night but he stayed up and it was a thrill when his name was called out.”

Corey feels like he has fallen on his feet to be part of the powerful Comets line-up.

“It’s an amazing competition playing with and against state and international representatives,” he said.

“We’ve got Scott Thulborn and James Gregory who are amazing players and it’s good watching them and learning from them.”

Vicki’s Pirates meet Charlie’s Chargers in Round 2 on Friday night but mum and son will be on different rinks.

“I think it’s a good thing,” Charlie said. “At least we won’t spend the week getting in each other’s minds.

“And I’m a bit worried about what I’ll get for dinner.”
