Anne Cornwell tournament played in Wudinna
The Wudinna Bowling Club hosted this year’s annual Ladies Eyre Peninsula Anne Cornwell Lawn Bowls Tournament held from November 10 to November 12.
The three-day event brings teams from across the Eyre Peninsula to compete.
Wudinna Ladies President Marie Mullan and Region 5 State Event Manager Di Eatts both welcomed everyone, with a special thank you to Rob Reiman, from Caddieshack Bowls, who sponsored the event.
The tournament is named after the late Anne Cornwell, of Tumby Bay, who dedicated many years to promoting Ladies bowls in the region.
Day one was the fours competition, with weather predicted to be 42 degrees, strong winds, thunderstorms, and rain.
Play for the 20 teams commenced an hour early to beat the heat and all three rounds were played before a late lunch.
A stormy session interrupted play for nearly 15 minutes early in the day, but there were no interruptions for the rest of the day.
The heat, wind, and a few health issues saw five substitute players from Wudinna step up and help the visiting teams.
Section winners for the Fours, who played off on the Thursday, were:
- A rink – Team Angie Turner from Cowell
- B rink – Team Sue Rumbelow from Streaky Bay
- C rink – Team Pam Edmunds from Streaky Bay
- D rink – Team Sue Higgins from Streaky Bay
The rink B winner was decided not only by win points of four each, then by shots up of 9 each, and finally bringing out the calculator to look at percentages.
Team Blacker’s percentage was 58.18%, which was pipped by Team Rumbelow with 58.82%.
You can’t get much closer than that.
On day two the temperature was much cooler for the Pairs competition, but windy Wudinna lived up to the name with a good breeze all day.
All of the pairs played in the qualifying round, with winners of those pairs playing in the next round. The finals were not played until the following day.
A minute’s silence was observed at 11am for Remembrance Day, with Peter Raftery attending the flag.
Day three was finals day.
In the Pairs, the shield went to Port Lincoln partners Vicki Lehmann and Chris Gardner, while the runners-up were Streaky Bay pair Jan Kenny and Lisa McEvoy.
The Fours were won by Cowell, the players being Angie Turner (skipper), Gloria Kent, Sue Enright and Sylvia Behm.
Fours runners-up were Streaky Bay, skippered by Pam Edmunds, with Janine Brown, Gaye Oswald and Carol Horseman.
Well done to all the players and to the Wudinna Club for hosting.
The greens were in top condition thanks to the fivw volunteer greenkeepers.
The ladies did a fantastic job with catering, especially with conforming to COVID Safe conditions which meant two sittings of their yummy lunches.
Thanks also to the guys who stepped up to man the bar.
