Glenelg hosting Harmony Day event

Harmony and multiculturalism will be the key messages at a Glenelg Bowling Club event later this month.

The club is running a Harmony Day event on Friday, March 19, with people from all backgrounds and of any gender or ability encouraged to attend and play some bowls.

Club president and communications officer Mark McKay said this year will be the third time the club has run the event.

“We missed out last year due to COVID, but there was still plenty of interest,” he said.

“The event is definitely building each year, which is very exciting for us.”

Mark said the event always provides a positive experience for everyone involved and he is looking forward to another strong turn out this year.

“The first time around, with only a very short lead in time, we had 15 different nationalities represented and it was great,” he said.

“There was a lot of colour and movement and a lot of laughs and smiles around the place.”

Mark encouraged other clubs to consider hosting similar events to help attract new people to the sport.

“We know there are bowlers from different communities already playing the sport,” he said.

“It is the first step of getting people through the door.

“They might not want to play pennants, but they might play social bowls, which is great to at least get them out having a roll.”
