State Singles Champions Crowned
The 2021/22 Sports Centre State Singles Champions were crowned at the Marion Bowling Club today, with Somerton’s Nathan Pedersen taking out the men’s competition, while Laini McGorman won the women’s.
McGorman defeated Adelaide teammate Tamzin Jenke by nine shots in the round of 16, before overcoming Goolwa’s Renata Callisto by seven shots in the quarter finals, and she then booked her spot in the final with a six-shot win over Li Song, of Lockleys, in the semi-finals.
McGorman was met in the final by Kapunda’s Katrina Green, after she defeated Moonta’s Sharon Cavanagh by seven shots in the final 16, then Milswood’s Di Stor by eight shots in the quarter finals and then Adelaide’s Heather Gunn by 10 shots in the semi-finals.
The final was a close battle, with McGorman leading the majority of the way, and despite a late comeback by Green, she was able to notch an eight-shot win in the decider.
Nathan Pedersen kicked off his final 16 campaign in strong fashion scoring a 12-shot win over Grange’s Nathan Black, before he beat Adelaide’s Corey Hicks also by 12 shots in the quarter finals, and then he booked his spot in the final with a five-shot win of Holdfast’s Craig Goldfinch.
Pedersen was met in the final by Nuriootpa’s Stuart Forbes, who beat Hawthorn’s Colin Watkins by by six shots in the final 16, before going on to beat Bute’s Bob Scott by three shots in the quarter finals and then Riverton’s Neil Rogers by 15 shots in the semi-finals.
The final was a marathon affair, with Forbes control proceedings early, but he was unable to register any major numbers.
Pedersen wrestled his way back into the contest, before a lengthy arm-wrestle ensued.
The match was eventually locked at 24 apiece, before Pedersen came up clutch to clinch victory by one shot.
