State pairs set to kick off tournament calendar

by BowlsSA2 on November 5, 2020

The 2020/21 State Pairs competition kicks off tomorrow, with entrants across South Australia preparing for their shot at glory.

Entries for this year’s men’s competition have increased from last year, while the women’s competition has seen a growth in regional entries.

The tournament is the first on the 2020/21 calendar of events.

Qualifying begins on Friday in metropolitan areas, with a number of players taking up the new option, which has been included alongside the traditional Sunday timeslot.

Matches for the men in Metropolitan Adelaide will be held at Adelaide Bowling Club on Friday, then spread across, Ascot Park, Grange, Marion, Modbury and Somerton on Sunday. While the metropoltian women’s qualifying matches will be held at Semaphore, Henley and Modbury.

Regional qualifying will also be held at a number of venues including Naracorte in Region 1, Port Wakefield, Mintaro and Saddleworth in Region 8.

Region 6’s women’s matches will be played on the newly re-done green at Hahndorf, while the men’s games will be held at Geranium and Lameroo.

Region 4 introduced association qualifying this year, which has been a huge success with four full sections for the Barossa men and three sections for the Riverland men.

The Barossa are playing at Tanunda for both the men and women and Loxton RSL will host the Riverland men.

This will see a reduction in traveling for the first week for Region 4, before they will then go on to play knockouts the following week at Loxton RSL.

Following Sectional qualifying, Metropolitan knockout matches will be held next Sunday, November 15, with men’s matches being held at Prospect-Broadview and Torrensville, while women’s matches will also be held at Torrensville.

Regional knockout matches will be also be held on the same day at various regional venues.

For the first time, the men’s and women’s final 16 and quarter finals will be going regional, with the men’s matches to be held on Sunday, November 22, at Clare, while the women’s games will take place at Hamley Bridge.

The men’s and women’s semi-finals and finals will be held at Holdfast Bay on Friday, November 27.

Craig Mills and Nathan Black, both of West Lakes, took out the 2019/20 men’s state pairs title, while Chris Thulborn, of Adelaide, and Lyn Prosso, of Marion, won the women’s event. Both pairs will be competing together once again in this year’s competitions.
