Simmons Seals Inaugural Green Keeper Award
Ardrossan’s Jack Simmons was crowned winner of the inaugural Volunteer Green Keeper of the Year award at the recent Bowls SA 2023 – 24 Awards.
Simmons has been the Ardrossan Bowling Club’s volunteer green keeper for six years and assisted with the greens for five years prior.
He was the driving force behind the recent installation of Ardrossan’s automatic watering system, which now keeps the greens in prime condition, with fewer volunteers to assist.
Simmons said while the award was recognition for the hard work he puts in, he said “its just what you do”.
“We have got a lot of helpers, but being a farmer, no one else knows how to use a sprayer or even has a spray ticket like I have,” he said.
“That’s just part of being retired, I moved off the farm and into the bowling club.”
Simmons’ advice to anyone considering helping out with their club’s greens or other volunteer roles was simple.
“Just do a little bit,” he said.
“If everyone does a little bit, it will make it easier on everybody else.”
