SA Super League Round 1
The SA Super League commenced on a balmy winter night at the Salisbury Bowling Club. Formal preceding commenced with addresses from the City of Salisbury Mayor, Gillian Aldridge, and Bowls SA Chief Executive Officer Mark Easton.

With a strong crowd of over 400 gathering, the 6pm matches kicked off with a bang, with the Central Chargers up against the Eastern Raiders. The live-stream rink saw the triples match up of the Charger’s Renata Callisto, Adrian Green and Mark Haines taking on the Raiders’ Duane Edwards, Chris Flavel and Carl Schapel, the Charger’s trio were out of the blocks early winning the first three ends, before the Raiders fired back to ironically charge ahead 8-5 at the halfway mark, before holding off a late fight to take out the win 19-11. The pairs match up saw the Raiders duo of Tony Treloar and Michael Lodge playing the Chargers Steve Dennis and Wayne Ruediger. The Chargers pair took the lead early and took the spoils 30-11. In the singles rubber the Central Chargers were represented by Craig Mills while Eastern Raiders were represented by Mitch Percy. The start for Mills was much like his pairs counterparts with a quick lead, Percy tightened up the score before a super end for Mills results in a three turning into a six and jumping ahead to be 18-8 in front. The remaining ends saw Mills holding on to win 25-13. The Central Chargers took out their first round with a 66-43 scoreline.

In the other early match, the South Eastern Spartans and the Southern Blazers went head to head. The Spartans Vicki Arbon, Scott Binns and Tony Devlin fought out a tough battle with the Blazers Karen Gatto, Brenton Speed and Marc Evans, with the Spartans claiming the spoils 15-12. The pairs match up saw the young Spartans combination of Nathan Black and Tyson Wilson down early to the Blazers pair of Dylan Lewis and Ashley Whiley. Black and Wilson pulled together however, and jumped ahead to be 10-5 after 7 before Lewis and Whiley almost levelled the scores at 9-10. The young Spartan duo charged home strongly to finish with a 28-13 victory. In the Singles, the Blazers Geoff Munn was too strong for the Spartan’s Blake Fiebig, although it was a closer tussle than the scoreline showed, an effective Super End on the 8th end saw Munn take the lead with an 11-5 scoreline, before holding out Fiebig’s efforts to win 21-13. The two wins in the pairs and triples were enough to see the South Eastern Spartans claim their first SA Super League win 56-46.

The 8pm matches also had no shortage of talent with the Mallee Pirates up against the Western Rogues in the first match up. The live-stream rink covered the pairs match up between Pirates’ Adam Forbes & Andrew Hill against the Rogues combination of Ashley Klose and Josh Studham. The Rogues combination fired an early shot picking up a full count of 6 on the first end followed by scores on the next 3 ends to establish a dominant 11-0 lead. The Pirates combination worked their way into the game to bridge the gap to within 6 shots, before some great shots from Studham and a count of 5 on the 11th end saw them establish a match winning lead, running out 28-11 winners. Alongside the Pairs Simon Dorr of the Pirates took on Simon Geater-Johnson of the Rogues in the singles with a titanic struggle ensuing. The players were never separated by more than 3 shots and as the payers traded blows the result was a fitting 15-15 draw of the highest quality. In the final discipline of this match up Mallee Pirates triples combination of David Carter, Jeff Davis & Gary Meekoms took on Sam Dietrich, Corey Wildash & Max Kleinig of the Rogues. The Rogues started strongly and held a comfortable lead before a game changing Super End on the 17th score 8 shots in favour of the Pirates to close the gap to 18-19. A clutch drive from Rogues skipper Kleinig put any hopes of a miracle win to bed as the Rogues took 4 shots and a 23-18 victory. On the back of the strong pairs win and support from the other disciplines the Rogues took a 66-44 victory.

The final match of the evening saw the Heysen Comets taking on the team of the host venue the Northern Knights. The pairs discipline saw Ben Harris & James Gregory of the Comets take on Bernie Ward and Todd Brand of the Knights. Befitting of the talent on the rink another close game ensued with all players contributing well. The Comets eventually prevailed with a slender 17-15 victory. Next door the singles representatives were Ashley Halls for the Comets and Darren Warner for the Knights. In a see-sawing affair the players traded the lead with Warner appearing to have the upperhand leading 18-13. Halls then produced an inspired comeback to rattle off the last 5 ends and record a 26-18 victory for the Comets which would prove critical for the overall standing of the match. Finally the triples teams were lead by Josh Chopin, Damon Edmunds & Darren Niblett for the Comets against Yvonne Kelly, Luke Pietersma & Kane Coulls of the Knights. Sounding like a broken record in yet another close and enthralling game the teams couldn’t be split heading into the last end before Coulls guided his rink to a 18-15 victory for the Knights. It wasn’t quite enough to get his team over the line overall with the Heysen Comets taking a 58-51 victory overall.

Concluding a successful Launch evening, attention now turns to the next fixture on the calendar being our first double header on Sunday August 5th where Rounds 2&3 will be battled out at the Salisbury Bowling Club.
