Launch 19/5/18

Bowls SA has some EXCITING news. We are launching a new elite level competition, to be known as the SA SUPER LEAGUE coming in July 2018!

Bowls SA have been conducting a review of our events, state pathways and the commercial opportunities for the sport of bowls within SA, and in doing so we have identified a new prospect for growth and opportunities. The SA Super League is designed to be a state-wide, dynamic, fast paced format of the game, which clearly defines the journey from local club to state and national pathways. We are pleased to have support from Lion Nathan, SportsCentre, The Advertiser and the City of Salisbury in creating this new competition.

It should be noted off the top, that this new competition does not propose to change the way that any established associations operate their pennant competitions within South Australia

The competition’s primary objectives are to:
– Create a competition that fills a void at a state wide elite competition level
– Create a competition that assists in Elite pathway selection
– Provide quality competition to challenge players to improve performance
– Create an attractive, commercially viable, marketable competition to create promotion and publicity for the sport of bowls.
– Create a product that builds profile for our elite players
– Fill a gap by creating a new competition format to assist participation at club level

The competition will be unlike any other event on the Bowls SA calendar, with 8 newly established state wide teams formed, and each affiliated bowling club in South Australia being aligned with one of these teams to act as feeder clubs.  This serves the purpose of assisting country clubs or metropolitan clubs without a high grade pennant side, to retain their best available talent as the individual players can play in the best competition in the state, whilst being based out of their home club. To see a breakdown of which team each affiliated club is aligned to, please click here.

The competition is not only for the players but the spectator experience for anyone who loves the sport will be truly sensational. The game day experience will aim to replicate your other favourite sports providing a great atmosphere, food, beverages and opportunity get up close to the action to follow your local team!

In the interest of creating an even competition, there will also be a live player draft. This creates the opportunity for any registered member within South Australia who has aspirations of playing high level bowls to submit an application for the player draft where they will be considered for selection by any of the 8 teams.

Some of the concepts of the competition include:

Squad Format:

-State based league with 8 teams associated with geographical areas
-Teams consist of 12 Players per squad (Gender balance of minimum of 3 each gender)
– Each team must have a minimum 6 players from its aligned region or zone (including a minimum 2 from country  and metro clubs respectively). These will be the Marquee Players for each team.
– 6 players will be selected in the live player draft, with all members in the state, available to nominate for the draft. This is where teams will be able to select the best available talent from outside their geographical area.
– within the draft, 2 players drafted by each team must be Under 18 Players.
– Each Player selected in a squad must play a minimum of 1 of the 7 games
-Each team will have an accredited coach for the team to make squad selections, select weekly teams, select playing positions, be the main point of contact for the team and develop players in the squad.

Match Day:

– All matches for the inaugural season will be based out of the Salisbury Bowling Club and played on their magnificent undercover facility.
– 6 players per team on match days, playing in Singles, Pairs & Triples disciplines
– Game Format:
Singles – 18 ends
Pairs – 18 ends (3×3 pairs)
Triples – 18 ends (2 bowl triples)
– Teams play for Overall Scoreboard as well as rink scoreboards.
– Power-play (double shots) for each team (2 each for the game)
– No dead ends, re spot on the T

– Live player draft recorded directly to our Facebook page
