Rob McKeown’s hard work and dedication to learning saw him claim the Official of the Year title at this year’s Bowls SA Awards.

The Payneham member took out the honour ahead of fellow finalists, Alan Lambert, of Kensington/Marryatville, and Kevin Bettens, of Wasleys.

Rob said he was “surprised and grateful” to be announced as the winner.

“I’m in the company of a lot of great officials and friends I have made through bowls and through my official role and they have done a lot to make me a better official too,” he said.

Rob highlighted why he loves officiating the sport of bowls.

“I enjoy the feedback and the sport, along with the company of the other officials and the appreciation of the players and the people in the clubs that give great feedback and thanks and do a lot to support us,” he said.

“They appreciate that we are human and we are doing our best.”

Rob implored others to put their hands up and try officiating to help the sport moving forward.

“You learn more about the game and about people, you have great experiences, and you get great opportunities,” he said.

“Give it a go, you’ve got nothing to lose.”
