The best of the best has been selected for South Australia to compete in the upcoming Australian Sides Championships. The Reds are set to take over Darwin and Nightcliff Bowling Clubs from 2nd to 5th May.

The State Selectors were impressed with the quality of bowls at the SA v Vic series and Prestige Medley, bringing much excitement.

The men are in line to back up the 2017 Australian Sides Champions Alley Shield title, with a strong team dynamic. The Sides for 2018 will see the men line up with the same rinks as the SA v Vic series, after competing strongly against rivals Victoria in February/ March. New additions to the team Josh Studham, Ashley Klose and Mitch Percy competed well throughout the series to secure their place in the team for Sides.

The combined team efforts from all players was a standout and is a reflection of the work from coach Les Carter. Overall the selected team has a great fusion of strengths and is set to be right in the mix for a medal come the conclusion of the event.

The men’s team will be led by last year’s winning coach of the Alley Shield team and current Bowls Australia Coach of the Year Les Carter, who said there are “A couple of changes from last year’s team that won the Alley Shield, however this side has the talent, grit and determination to be a contender in Darwin. The team is well balanced and is keen to put on our best performance for the sides. Go Reds”.

There will be no shortage of competitors to challenge SA in their defence, with Victoria currently looking to be a top contender for the men after recently defeating NSW and SA in their annual test series”.

After a disappointing result for the women on the scoreboard from the SA v Vic series, the selectors have made a few tweaks to the rinks in hope of boosting the team. The full pace Victorian team has prepared the SA women for the sides making the women a strong compatible unit going into the event.

Amongst those in attendance will be stand out players Theresa Emberton who debuted in the state team and Laini McGorman who returned to the fold after stepping down a few years ago.

Women’s State Coach, Faye Luke stated “I am excited to be a member of our Reds team to take on the best of our country in Darwin in May. We may lack some experience but we certainly make up for it with our enthusiasm, team comradery, and our commitment to be the best that we can be. We are looking forward to playing for each other and enjoying ourselves and the results will take care of themselves. The rivalry between all states is brilliant and we can’t wait to put our skills on show. As long as when the last bowl is bowled we can all look one and other in the eye and say “we gave it our all and some” will be our goal”.

Faye added “how good is it that NT are able to host this prestigious event. We are looking forward to playing alongside our victorious men’s team and hope that our performances combined can give SA a great shot at the overall champion state title, Come on the Reds!”

The team of 24 are preparing for the biggest event for 2018, aiming for top positions on the ladder and to be crowned the overall Champion State.

The Darwin conditions will be challenging for the players, however Bowls SA and State Selectors are confident the team will compete strongly and wish the team all the best.
