Pirates brimming with confidence
The Mallee Pirates will head into this weekend’s SA Super League round full of confidence after scoring a win over the previously undefeated Northern Knights last Friday night.
After hosting last week’s game at their home club Modbury, the Pirates will face the Heysen Comets at the Adelaide Bowling Club this Friday night.
Pirates’ player Simon Dorr, who scored a big win in the singles last week over the Knights’ Will McPharlin, said the home ground advantage proved crucial for the Pirates.
“We were feeling a little bit nervous, but at the same time we felt confident playing a home game,” he said.
“It was definitely a massive advantage for us playing at Modbury.
“That gave us a lot of confidence and in the end that proved vital.”
Simon said it felt good to be able to beat an undefeated team.
“It seemed like we were in control all night,” he said.
“We knew we were up against a very good side, but past experiences for some of our other players and myself playing on that B green at Modbury came in very handy.”
Simon said the positive result was crucial for the Pirates heading into the second half of the season.
“We desperately needed a win and when you haven’t had a win yet the confidence can get down, but having a win against the best side at the time holds you in good stead,” he said.
“It gives you the confidence to win again, especially heading into our game this week.”
Simon said he is looking forward to the challenge of taking on the Comets.
“We are playing them at Adelaide and that is personally another venue I really enjoy playing at,” he said.
“I reckon a few of the other guys will be feeling the same way, so we will be confident going into the game.”
Simon believes strong performances from the Pirates’ reserves and under 21s have kept the league players on their toes.
“It is good to have those guys playing well as well,” he said.
“It puts pressure on the guys that are in the side, especially considering we hadn’t had a win until last week.
“It is good to see the young ones doing well also.”
