McCarthy Makes Her Mark As Official of the Year
Ardrossan’s Penny McCarthy was crowned 2023 – 24 Official of the Year at the recent Bowls SA Awards night.
As a retired International Technical Official McCarthy is proficient in all aspects of officiating and is also a Presenter and Assessor, spending numerous hours educating bowlers to become officials in the Yorke Peninsula Region.
She has been a regular at the Adelaide Masters over many years now and once again this season gave her time, and valuable knowledge and skills over the Easter holidays to help mark and umpire at the event.
McCarthy said it was “absolutely fantastic” to win the award and said being an official is not as tough as some people might think.
“It’s just common sense mostly,” she said.
McCarthy was full of encouragement for anyone considering taking up being an official.
“Go for it,” she said.
“The opportunity to mark games is my favourite part of being an official.”
