Longstanding Tradition at Grange Bowling Club

Grange Bowling Club hosted its 30th Annual Sleeper Day Trophy tournament, a unique event bringing together four clubs: Police, Customs, RSL, and Master Builders. This gathering is special as it allows these clubs to interact and prepare for their respective national championships. The competition featured four teams of 16 open gender bowlers each.

The highlight of the day was the intense final game between RSL and Master Builders, determining the competition’s winner. With one team scoring 56 points and the next two tied at 52 points each after three games, it was a closely contested event.

The tournament has a rich history spanning three decades, with the Grange club investing significant time in its organization. The iconic sleeper trophy holds a unique story – crafted from an offcut during renovations at Grange jetty in its inaugural year.

Approximately 25 volunteers contributed to the smooth running of the event alongside kitchen staff. While serving as a fundraiser for the club, it primarily fosters camaraderie among participating clubs and members. Former members from various clubs often participate across different teams.

Featuring a round-robin format where each team competes against all others once, players enjoy breaks for meals like lunch and morning tea. An interesting twist includes pausing the second game midway to aid catering coordination before resuming post-lunch.

Scores are promptly displayed on screens throughout the day creating excitement among participants. Additionally, rewards such as bottles of wine are given to leading rinks, adding an extra competitive edge.

Managed by Trevor Lloyd and Chris Natt, a former Port Adelaide footballer  and supported by dedicated volunteers ensures seamless execution annually. The positive response from participating clubs cements this event as a regular fixture in their calendars fostering sportsmanship and community spirit.

Looking ahead, next year’s tournament is scheduled for Friday following the long weekend in October – promising another memorable edition of this longstanding tradition at Grange Bowling Club.
