Gatto Wins State Event Player of the Year
West Lakes Bowling Club’s Karen Gatto was crowned Women’s State Event Player of the Year at the recent 2023 – 2024 Bowls SA Awards Night.
Gatto’s standout state event season included making multiple finals and winning the Champion of Champion Singles title.
Gatto said the award capped off an enjoyable season of state events.
“It was hard work, but it was worth it,” she said.
“Its an acknowledgement of all the hard work you put in with the training and the long hours and the time and effort you put in away from your family.”
Gatto said the camaraderie of getting to play with friends was a key reason that keeps her coming back to state events each season.
“The state events aren’t only about the singles events, its also about playing with your mates,” she said.
“The team events are so special because you have each other and win, lose or draw you are there doing it with your mates, which is the best thing you can do.”
Gatto’s advice for bowlers out there considering entering a state event for the first time.
“Give it a crack. You might be a little bit shy or thoughtful about entering, but once you start playing you learn so much,” she said.
“Your bowls get better, you make new friends, and your bowls can take you anywhere.”
