From Vision to Victory: Port Hughes Bowling Club Celebrates Breakout First Season
In a remarkable tale of grassroots initiative and community pride, the Port Hughes Bowling Club is celebrating the completion of its debut season—an impressive achievement for a club that didn’t even exist this time last year.
Born from a public meeting to gauge interest, the club has transformed from concept to competition in just twelve months. Now, with a competitive team, a growing membership base, and bold plans for the future, Port Hughes Bowling Club is fast becoming a shining example of what community spirit can achieve.
Led by inaugural President Kevin Robinson and a passionate foundation board, the club hit the green with an Open Division 1 side that notched four wins and a draw, finishing 9th in a ten-team competition. The club’s Wednesday Men’s team made a sensational run to the Grand Final—an incredible feat for a new entrant.
“Although we didn’t take out the flag, reaching the final in our first season was something really special,” said Robinson.
The Wallaroo Mines Bowling Club played a pivotal role in the fledgling club’s success, opening their facilities to Port Hughes for home games, training sessions, and social events throughout the 2024/25 season.
“We are so grateful to the Wallaroo Mines Bowling Club and their members for giving us a home and making us feel welcome,” Robinson said. “Their generosity enabled us to get off the ground and bring our community together.”
Off the green, the club cultivated a strong sense of belonging. Regular social events drew crowds and created lasting connections among players, volunteers, and supporters. The club’s inclusive culture has quickly become its hallmark.
Behind the scenes, a committed leadership team guided the club through its crucial first year. Special thanks were given to Secretary Bob Bradley, Treasurer Scott Wilson, Assistant Secretary Ann Robinson, and board members Jeff Adams, Kim Redshaw, Jill James, and Chris Cunningham.
“Their dedication, skills, and can-do attitude were instrumental in making this dream a reality,” Robinson said.
The club also paid tribute to its growing list of supporters and sponsors, who have provided critical financial and in-kind support: Protea Auto and Electrical, A&H Electrical, Bettatrans, Port Hughes General Store, Port Hughes Tavern, Barossa Accounting/Vecta Wealth, ANZ Mobile Lending, Simpson Budgerigars, and P&J Countryside Care.
Looking forward, the club has announced plans to expand its teams in the upcoming season with an additional Open Division 2 side and a Ladies team. In a move sure to excite members and supporters, the club also confirmed the proposed site for a brand-new home: the future home of the Port Hughes “Sharks”.
“This next chapter is about growth and inclusivity,” said Robinson. “We’re inviting people of all skill levels and backgrounds to get involved. Whether you’ve played for decades or have never picked up a bowl, there’s a place for you here.”
As the sun sets on a stellar inaugural season, one thing is clear: Port Hughes Bowling Club is more than just a sporting team—it’s a movement, and it’s only just getting started.
