Bowls program a hit with SA schools

A new generation have been exposed to the game of lawn bowls this year with the success of a schools program here in South Australia.

Bowls Australia’s sporting schools program has seen a major increase in uptake from 13 schools in 2019, to 32 schools in 2020.

James Wilson, Bowls Australia Participation and Programs Manager based in South Australia, said it was an exciting time to see the increase in uptake.

“2020 has obviously been a chaotic year, but it has been really promising to see an increase in schools wanting to get involved with our program,” he said.

“It is always fun to get out and about in the community, especially in schools, seeing so many children enjoy our great game, while also being COVID safe.

“Lawn bowls is a great sport for youngsters to get involved with.

“We do our best to simplify the sport as much as possible and get the kids learning some of the skills involved with playing lawn bowls.

“My philosophy is all about getting the kids out there on the greens and experiencing the sport, because I find letting kids be hands on and experience something for themselves is the most effective method.”
