Armed Bowling Grows in South Australia
Submitted by SA Bowling Arm Association – Affiliated with Bowls SA
The Armed Bowlers state singles competition was held at the Salisbury Bowling Club on the 27, 28 and 29 April. A record number of entrants saw 44 armed bowlers competing in the sectional round on the Saturday, some great bowling was on display with many close games. 16 bowlers progressed to the knockout stage on Sunday and this number was further reduced to 4 for the semifinals on Monday.
The first semifinal saw Greg Davis from Victor Harbour matched up against Craig Keeley from Playford with Greg Davis prevailing 25-22.
The second semifinal saw Terry Holding from Oakbank up against Gary Miles from Toorak Burnside, Gary Miles was the victor in this game 25-12.
The final in the afternoon was very entertaining with very good bowling on show. In the end it was Greg from Victor Harbour who was crowned the Champion of 2024 beating Gary 25-14 (pictured below).
SA State Side Trials
On the first weekend of May the trials were held for the State side to represent SA in the upcoming national championship competition for armed bowlers to be held at East Maitland in September.
As with the state singles competition we had a record number of bowlers come along to try and qualify, 42 in total (pictured in the featured photo).
There was a lot of good bowling seen over the 2 days of qualifying and selecting the team was very difficult. There were a number of players who have shown great improvement over the last 12 months and I hope this continues as it can only make our side stronger in the future.
The final list of players who were chosen to represent SA are as follows:
Eddie Dolan – Tranmere
Veronica Dolan – Tranmere
Gary Miles – Toorak Burnside
Allan Walker – Toorak Burnside
Robert Corner – Mt. Gambier RSL
Gary Feast – Mt. Gambier RSL
Karen Shelton – Victor Harbour
Greg Davis – Victor Harbour
Penny McCarthy – Ardrossan
Tom Ellis – Grange
Patrick Lynch – Robe
Ian Burton – Pt. Noarlunga
Peter Somers – Adelaide
Ray Lamond – Clare
Neil Morris – Jervois
David Wuttke – Uraidla
Daryl Karger – Kirton Pt.
Phil Sanders – Salisbury
We once again encourage as many people as possible to come along next year.
The Armed Bowlers State Team would also like to thank Salisbury Bowling Club for hosting the events for us and also their wonderful generosity in donating the green fees back to the Armed Bowlers team that were collected during the Singles competition.
