2020/21 Champion of Champion Singles – Day Two Results

by BowlsSA on April 18, 2021

The 2020/21 Men’s & Women’s Champion of Champion Singles events concluded on Sunday April 18th at the Ascot Park Bowling Club. We were treated to all four seasons of weather in one day but that didn’t stop some of the highest quality matches being played.

In the Men’s event, the final was contested between Will Mcpharlin of Port Wakefield and Brenton Roberts of Strathalbyn. Mcpharlin, a previous champion in this event won his way through to the final with earlier wins over Bob Scott from Bute and Nathan Pedersen from Somerton. His opponent Roberts who was runner up in this event last year by a small margin, got through to the final with wins over Kym Reynolds from Gawler and Scott Thulborn from Adelaide.

The final was a ding-dong match up with players trading blows early before Mcpharlin opened up a handy 14-6 lead. Roberts clawed his way back though and seemed destined to go one better than last year leading 20-19 and holding two different match lies before Mcpharlin came up clutch killing two consecutive ends then claiming two shots to take the title 21-20. In the Women’s event, the final was contested between Kathy Miller from Payneham and Sharon Cavanagh from Moonta Memorial. Miller won her way through to the final by defeating Joyce Roast from Woodville and Karen Gatto from West Lakes earlier in the day. Cavanagh defeated Laini Mcgorman from Adelaide and then had a big comeback win over fellow Yorke Peninsula bowler Debbie Dennis of Port Broughton in the Semi Final.

After a long semi final that saw her on the green for an hour longer than Miller, Cavanagh started the better skipping away to a 9-2 lead despite the heads being tight early in the contest. No one could have guessed what was going to happen next though will Miller eventually breaking the run and piling on 19 unanswered shots to runaway as the Women’s Champion 21-9, claiming the Riina Bradbrook shield.

Thank you to all the volunteers of the Ascot Park Bowling Club, Officials and Umpires who assisted with the day.
