Minor premiers wary of talented opposition
While the Western Rogues finished minor premiers for the 2020 SA Super League season, they know they will have their work cut out for them this week when finals get under way.
The Rogues will come up against the Central Chargers at Salisbury, with the winner progressing to the following week’s grand final, while the loser will face the winner of the clash between the Northern Knights and Eastern Raiders in the preliminary final later in the evening.
The Rogues and Chargers met in round four, with the Rogues claiming overall victory, after winning the singles and pairs.
Rogues coach Wilson Golby said finishing minor premiers was a “great result”.
“It was a surprise on one hand, but not on the other,” he said.
“It is one of those situations where you expect some good results but wouldn’t be disappointed if you didn’t achieve it.”
Wilson believes the attitude of the Rogues’ players has been key to their strong performances so far this season.
“There is an air of confidence with our team,” he said
“To me it is rare you come across it, and I have been involved with bowls for 20 years, but the enthusiasm amongst the players is amazing.
“It translates on the greens in their performances.
“It is great to watch and listen to them all with their enthusiasm.
“Forget the concept that bowls is a spot for 80-year-old’s, it is for anybody and everybody.”
Wilson expects a tough challenge for his side this week when they come up against the Central Chargers.
“I haven’t seen enough of them (the Chargers) as I would like to,” he said.
“Our team are going out there expecting a hard game, but they are expecting to do well, and they will.
“We will go out there and give it a good crack.
“I think we will stick with a fairly similar line-up to what we have used in the past few weeks.”
