2023 Australian Championship Wrap
The concluding event at the 2023 Nationals in Perth, held at Joondalup Bowling Club was the 2023 Australian Championships from 17 – 20 October.
The depth of talent in South Australia rings true as we summarise the highlights below:
Congratulations Sue Phillips, Lee Robinson and Jacky Jacobs for winning a Silver medal with 3 wins and 0 losses. In the gold medal match they came up against the dominant 2020 conquerors Kate Matthews, Genevieve Delves and Natasha Van Eldik who secured gold 28-6 in the Women’s Triples.
David Carter, Gary Thompson and Gary Meekcoms battled gallantly with one win and two losses in the Men’s Triples
Laini McGorman and Brett Davis with 2 wins and 1 loss fought valiantly in the Mixed Pairs to make it into the bronze medal final but just missed out on a bronze medal.
Congratulations Cath Greenslade and Jodi Kotz who won a silver medal with 2 wins, no losses and 1 draw. Cath and Jodi’s tight gold medal final against Queensland’s Claire Turley and Lynsey Clarke was a thrilling match against a pair of elite athletes in our game, who secured gold 12-10 in the Women’s Pairs.
Leigh Brennan and Ray Dienelt competed courageously in the Men’s pair without a win but with closely fought matches.
Our foursome of Sue Hutchinson, Pam Edmunds, Sue Maddern and Sandra Wallace with 1 win and 2 losses competed strongly against a star studded field.
Our foursome of Matthew Northcott, Simon Geater-Johnson, Ashley Klose and Max Kleinig with 1 win and 2 losses were highly competitive against tough opponents.
Congratulations Lea Modra for winning a silver medal with 2 wins and 1 loss. Lea faced off against Jessie Cottell (NSW) and lead 6-1 after five ends before Cottell surged to the finish line 25-9 to take the gold medal.
Will McPharlin fought gallantly even though there were no wins to his name.
Bowls SA congratulates all South Australian state event finals winners who won their state event during finals week earlier this year to qualify for this championship. You certainly did us all proud, the way you competed for our much-loved state.
