SA SUPER LEAGUE – MEDIA RELEASE
Tonight, the Bowls SA headquarters hosted its second Lawn Bowls draft for the upcoming state wide competition, the SA Super League.
Selecting from a pool of 144 hopeful draftees from Bowling Clubs from all across South Australia, the SA Super League added 48 talented players across eight franchises, from areas all across South Australia to the six already retained Players in each squad.
Acting CEO Erin Haines said “there was a real thirst to be involved by talented players in the SA Super League and the interest was overwhelming, with this shown from the number and range of nominees putting their names forward for consideration”.
Bowls SA are pleased to have support from the City of Salisbury in hosting the SA Super League at the Salisbury Bowling Club, as well as support from Sports Centre and Lion.
With the Western Rogues earning the right to the number one pick as they finished with the wooden spoon in the inaugural season, Grange Bowling Club player Carl Schapel was their first pick taking the coveted number one draft position. Carl a seasoned player, has played over 100 state games for South Australia.
At age 14, Marion Bowling Club’s Adam Black was the youngest player to be drafted in the first round of the 2019 SA Super League (South Eastern Spartans), however the title of youngest draftee went to Cooper Hocking (Adelaide Bowling Club) at the age of 13, being secured by the Mallee Pirates.
This year also saw the introduction of a wildcard pick for each team, drawn at random from local zone players not picked up in the draft. “Introducing the Wildcard selection this year, gives the potential for a lesser-known player to be picked up and show what they can do on the Super League stage”, Acting CEO Erin Haines said.
