by BowlsSA2 on April 26, 2019

Day Two of Champions Week 2 began in far colder and more gloomy conditions than the previous day, but it didn’t deter some great matches being played in the Men’s and Women’s Quarter, Semi and Finals matches.

In the Men’s Semi Finals the team of Kane Coulls took on the Waikerie combination skippered by Butch Burnett. A hot start from the Coulls team saw them race out to a 10-0 lead after 6 ends before a count of 5 to the team of Burnett swung proceedings. More close ends proceeded with Coulls still leading 12-8 after 11 ends before running out 20-11 victors. In the opposing Semi Final Craig Mills’ trio took on Brett Herbert from Bute and his chargers. It was the Bute team that made all the running early leading 7-2 then maintaining this to lead 10-6 at the halfway mark. The Mills team then began to turn the tables and peeled off the next six ends to grab the lead and didn’t look back to record a 22-13 victory.

In the Men’s Final it was a majority West Lakes affair with both teams being made up of two out of three West Lakes players. The team skippered by Kane Coulls played strongly throughout the first half of the match to establish a dominant lead of 19-8 after 12 of the 18 allotted ends. From here there was a big momentum shift with Mills team claiming the majority of the next ends which included a decisive count of five shots to close the gap to 20-18 with one end to play. His team held the two shots required to force an extra end with just one bowl left to play, but a well pointed drive from Coulls ran the jack into the ditch claiming two shots and the 2019 Men’s State Triples championship. A great effort by the same team that also saluted in this very event two years prior.

In the Women’s Semi Finals the team skippered by Chris Thulborn of Adelaide took on Karen Kneebone of Murray Bridge RSL. The Thulborn team started strongly to lead 11-1 at the halfway point before a count of 4 shots to the Kneebone combination put some life back into the contest. They couldn’t build on this momentum however and Thulborn’s team continued to apply pressure before running out 20-7 victors. In the opposing Semi Final a mouth watering match up was on offer with Denise Caulfied and her team battling Lea Modra for a place in the final. As expected the game was of a high standard with Modra leading 8-2 after 7 ends and looking the goods. Caulfield’s team then won four of the next five ends and a further three in a row later in the contest which proved decisive as they recorded a thrilling 15-14 victory.

The Final promised to be another great match up with five of the six players having represented South Australia at State level in their careers. A neck and neck match early saw neither team able to establish dominance and scores tied at 8-8 after 11 ends. Some steady bowling from all players in the Caulfield rink then began to swing the match in their favour and despite good resistance from the Thulborn team, proved to hot to handle as they recorded a 16-11 victory and claimed the 2019 Women’s State Triples Championship.
