2018-19 Champions Week 1 Day 2 Wrap Up

by BowlsSA3 on December 14, 2018

Day 2 of Champions Week for 2018 saw the State Mixed Pairs begin at Mount Barker on a wet and windy Friday morning, luckily for the players they had the Mount Barker Dome to provide them with much needed shelter after Murray Bridge Bowling Club’s greens were under water.

Quarter Finals

Once Players were out there it was all guns blazing, most of the games saw very tight contests which weren’t reflected by the scoreboard at the end of the game. The Happy Valley pair of Colin Watkins and Li Song were able to finish strongly to defeat Murray Bridge RSL’s Noel and Karen Kneebone 21-11. The Wirrabara duo of Brett Murdoch and Rhonda Janz had a one shot victory over Snowtown’s John Freebairn and Val Rowan (15-14). Streaky bay pair Pam and Cliff Edmunds had a great contest with Anne Merritt and Mark Ritchie of Willunga, in the end the Willunga duo held the Streaky Bay pair of by one shot to win 17-16. In the last Quarter Final match up it was Waikerie’s Cheryl and Roger Davies who ran away with a three shot win over Sue Maddern and Phil Nagel of Hahndorf.

Semi Finals

Again in the Semi-Finals we saw some tight battles and close heads across both games, with the teams looking to solidify their spot in the final. In a game that ebbed and flowed throughout, it was eventually the Wirrabara Pair proved too strong for Sue Maddern and Phil Nagel of Hahndorf, running away with a 16-12 win. On the adjacent rink Colin Watkins and Li Song of Happy Valley held a small lead for the entire game and unfortunately for Anne Merritt and Mark Ritchie (Willunga), they weren’t able to pull it back going down 19-11.

Final

After the Semi-Finals were done and dusted it was time for the final which was live streamed for all to see and it didn’t disappoint. Both leads were providing brilliant heads for their skips and it was a tight game throughout. After leading all game, the Happy Valley pair of Li Song and Colin Watkins were rained back in by Rhonda Janz and Brett Murdock who eventually pulled away to secure a 16-12 win and become the State Mixed Pairs Champions for 2018/19. Well done to all that were involved!

Please be reminded that the State Pairs Event will be played back at the Murray Bridge Bowling Club for Saturday and Sunday starting at 9:30am.
