2018-19 Champions Week 1 – Day 1 Wrap-Up

Day 1 of the 2018-19 Champions Week saw the event opened by Rural City of Murray Bridge Mayor Brenton Lewis. Once the event was opened, it was straight into play with the Men’s and Women’s State Fours commencing.

Quarter Finals

The Quarter-Finals of the Men’s Fours saw Port Wakefield’s Greg McPharlin, Jarrad Olsen, Will McPharlin and John Nicolai win through in a close game (13-10) over Ascot Park’s Nigel Ryan, Terry Howard, Jack Hateley and Gavin Pfeiffer. The game between Victor Harbor’s four of R Wilkins, J Gamble, Chris Monk and Les Basford and the Club Holdfast team of Damon Edmunds, Simon Geater-Johnson, Josh Studham and Ashley Klose saw the score locked at 12 a piece going into the last end. A brilliant final end bowl from Skipper Ashley Klose saw the Club Holdfast team win through to the Semi-Finals. Dennis Treloar (BER) had a solid win of Adelaide’s Alan Hurst and the tale was very similar in the matchup between Steve Trowse (HOL) and Graham Evans (HAN), with Trowse coming away with an 18-19 win. Anne Woods’s Goolwa side defeated the Moonta side skipped by Sharon Cavanagh 17-11. Another Treloar, this time Kerry, had a great win over Somerton’s Maree Tumbas and Raelene Heitmann (HOV) narrowly defeated Laini McGorman (PAY) in a ripping contest. The final match of the last 8 saw Christine Thulborn (ADL) win her way through against Pauline Mansell from Robertstown 22-5.

Semi-Finals

With the radar looking a bit clearer, play commenced for the semi-finals at Murray Bridge. With games only one or two ends in each, a torrential downfull occurred with greens quickly going underwater. Time off the greens saw some quick organising in the background with the decision made to move play to the undercover facility at Mount Barker. Once players arrived at Mount Barker, play resumed and saw the Club Holdfast side edge out Port Wakefield in a close game for the Men’s Fours. In the other Men’s game The Berri rink skipped by Dennis Treloar just got over the line against the Steve Trowse (HOL) led team. In the Women’s, Christine Thulborn matched up against Kerry Treloar and ran away with a 14-4 win. In the other Women’s Semi Raelene Heitmann proved too strong for the Goolwa side led by Anne Woods, with Heitmann winning 13-5

Finals

The Final of the Men’s Fours saw a family battle, with the team skipped by Ashley Klose taking on the team skipped by his Uncle, Dennis Treloar. The Club Holdast team took a strong early lead and through consistent bowling, Berri unfortunately weren’t able to gain much ground back going down 18-4.

The Final of the Women’s Fours saw the composite team skipped by Chris Thulborn pitted against the team skipped by Raelene Heitmann. In a similar match to the Men’s Thulborn’s side got out of the gates earlier and proved to be too good on the day picking up a number of shots of many occasions. In the end Thulborn (ADL) defeated Heitmann (HOV) 26-8,
