Grants & Funding

Grants
There are many sources for obtaining grants which are contained in the Club Development Network resource guide.

One thing to remember is that if you have taken the time to put in place a planning process for your club, then you have already done a lot of the hard work involved in applying for a grant.

Effectively you are simply asking for the resources to put into action the aims, targets and objectives you have developed in your strategic plan.

Fundraising

One of the difficulties clubs often face is in general fundraising.

The Australia Taxation Office provides information on managing your fundraising from a record keeping perspective.

The Australian Sports Foundation Ltd (ASF) was established by the Federal Government in 1986 to assist Australian sport and to generate funds for sport from the corporate sector and community.

The ASF assists non-profit sporting organisations, schools, councils and community organisations raise money for valid sport related projects.

These might include building new club rooms, upgrading oval lighting, buying sporting equipment, funding team travel to national championships or hosting a major event.

The ASF is a non-profit public company limited by guarantee and is listed in the Australian Sports Commission Act 1989. The ASF is also listed in Division 30, section 30-90 of the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997 which enables donations to the ASF to be eligible tax deductions.

There are many Bowling Clubs out there who can confirm that with the effort can come great reward!

Some clubs in the past have been successful with Grants for new greens, synthetic greens, purchasing of new bowls, small bowls and target mats for juniors, money for ‘Come N Try’ days and even money for the printing of letterbox flyers.

Helpful Hints

Here are the Top 5 hints to help you obtain a Grant:

1. ADVANCED THINKING
– Make sure you put grants on your club management agenda. This will ensure you are able to collect all the data, quotes etc prior to the grant application being released. If you wait too long, the closing date will leave no time to get everything organised! Part of this advanced thinking is to come up with projects and research them before the grants are released. This means if you notice your club will need new chairs soon, start preparing a grant now!

2. APPOINT – Try and nominate a person in the club who is capable and experienced at writing grant submissions (there is usually a person in the club who has the skills). This person will be responsible for sourcing grants, writing applications and reporting it all to the club management.

3. SUPPORT– Always be on the hunt for support for projects. This can include finding a partner organisation to be involved or if you can collect as many letters of support as you can from local MP’s, schools, or any other community group etc who use your facilities.

4. CONTACT – ALWAYS contact the grant provider to get the first hand knowledge that will be vital in filling out the application. If you go straight to the ‘Horses Mouth’ there will be no cross information, and they will be able to assist in your application.

5. RESEARCH – Ok, so this one it very self explanatory! If in the past you were not successful in a grant submission, call the provider and find out why? And definitely read all the fine print, you don’t want to find out that your ineligible after 4 weeks of writing the application!
